Global Gender Gap Report

  • India has ranked 140th in the Global Gender Gap Report 2021 released by the World Economic Forum for 156 countries, a decline of 28 places over the previous year. Previous year, India was ranked 112.
  • The top three countries in this report are Iceland, Finland and Norway respectively, while the three countries with the lowest ranking are Afghanistan (156), Yemen (155) and Iraq (154) respectively. Among the neighboring countries Bangladesh (65), Nepal, Sri Lanka, Maldives and Bhutan have performed better than India. Among the BRICS countries, South Africa’s rank is 18th and China’s 107th.
  • According to the report, South-Asia region has been the worst performer followed only by the Middle East and northern Africa. India's performance in South-Asia is the worst after Pakistan (153) and Afghanistan.
  • The report benchmarks the evolution of gender-based gaps in four areas: economic participation and opportunity, educational attainment, health and survival, and political empowerment.
