The Global Hunger Index (GHI), 2021 released jointly by Welthungerhilfe and Concern Worldwide. This year GHI ranking report included total 135 countries out of them 116 countries ranked based on the available data.
18 countries are get top rank in the report because these countries have scores less than 5 and have the least difference between their scores. Among these, China, Brazil, Turkey and Kuwait are the main countries.
India ranks 101st in the index with a score of 27.5 and here is 'serious' level of hunger. It is worth mentioning that last year its rank was 94. According to the report, widespread public life was affected by lockdown and the COVID-19 pandemic in India.
India has the highest child wasting rate globally, increasing from 17.1% between 1998 and 2002 to 17.3% between 2016 and 2020. However, India has improved in other three parameters.
India's neighboring countries, such as Nepal (76), Bangladesh (76), Myanmar (71) and Pakistan (92) are also in a worrying situation of starvation, but these countries performed better to provide food to their citizens as compared to India.
It is already known that GHI Countries are ranked on the basis of four indicators, these are-
Under nourishment – Inadequate availability of food in proportion to the population.
Child Stunting- Short height for age ratio in children below 5 years of age.
Child Wasting- low weight to height ratio in children below 5 years of age.
Child Mortality Rate – Mortality rate of children below 5 years of age.
