Glycosmis albicarpa

  • Recently, a new species of 'Gin Berry' has been discovered in Kanyakumari Wildlife Sanctuary, Tamil Nadu. Its botanical name is Glycosmis albicarpa.
  • The unique feature of 'Gin Aroma' is found in this berry. It is popular as an edible fruit.
  • This species is endemic to the Southern Western Ghats, with distinctive large white fruits. This species belongs to the orange family, Rutaceae.
  • Most of these plant species are collected from forests, which are used by the local people for their medicines and food.
  • This is a small tree of evergreen species. It was found as a single population in the Tirunelveli semi-evergreen forests in the Panagudi forest section with an area of about 2 Sq km. This area require special protection at present.
