GRAM UJALA PROGRAMME

  • Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has launched Gram Ujala program from Arrah district of Bihar. Under the program, rural consumers will be given LED Bulbs (maximum 5 bulbs per house) for only 10 rupees in lieu of normal bulbs installed at home. In the first phase of this program, 1.5 crore LED bulbs will be distributed in the villages of Arrah (Bihar), Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh), Vijayawada (Andhra Pradesh), Nagpur (Maharashtra) and Western Gujarat.
  • This program will have a significant impact on India's efforts related to climate change. This will save 202.5 million units (kWh) of electricity every year, while also reducing 16.5 lakh tonnes of carbon emissions per year.
  • The Gram Ujala program will be funded entirely through 'Carbon Credit', the first such program in India.
  • Carbon credit is actually an attempt to control carbon dioxide emissions. According to this, if a country is emitting carbon below the prescribed level, then the difference between that set level and the carbon emitted by the country is called the carbon credit of that country. It is noteworthy that carbon credits were first mentioned in the Kyoto Protocol (year 1997.
