GI Tag is provided to two agricultural products of Manipur ‘Hathei Chilli' and 'Tamenglong Orange'. To promote these products, Manipur organizes 'Sirarakhong Hathai Festival' and 'Orange Festival' every year in the months of August and December respectively.
The popular name of Hathei chili is Sirarakhong chili. It is produced under specific climatic conditions of Sirarkhong village of Ukhrul district. A folk song dedicated to this chili is also sing in this village. In this song the worth of chilli are compared to a prized shawl of the Tangkhul Naga tribe. This shawl is famous by the name of 'Khuilang'.
'Tamenglong Orange' belongs to the Mandarin group and Rutaceae family. It is produced only in Tamenglong district, hence this district of Manipur is called 'orange bowl'. Colour of this orange is bright orange.
Elements like phytochemicals and potassium are found in it, which are helpful in preventing cancer and heart diseases respectively. It is a perennial evergreen plant, which grows only in subtropical climate.
In the year of 2020 G.I. Tag was given to ‘Black Rice’ of Manipur. In regional language it is known as ‘Chak-Hao’.
