  • It is a statutory body.
    • It has been established under the Indian Veterinary Council Act 1984.
    • It receives grant-in-aid from the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying for the operation of its office.
    • Its functions:
      • To regulate veterinary practice
      • To prepare the register of Indian veterinarians; etc.
    • The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying conducts elections for the selection of its 11 members every 3 years.
    • This council also has nominated members.
