Researchers from the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) have discovered two new species of jumping spiders named Phintella dhritiae from Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary in Karnataka and Phintella platnicki from Salem district of Tamil Nadu.
The new species belongs to Phintella genus of Salticidae family which are small or medium sized colourful spiders. The spiders of this genus live under bushes, grass leaves and tree barks.
Their head is round or oval and relatively high while abdomen is oval or long. Out of four pairs of eyes found in these, three pairs of eyes are stable and one pair of eyes are dynamic. They are able to make precise, targeted jumps due to their sharp eyesight.
