Karthigai Deepam

  • Karthigai Deepam is one of the major festivals of South India. This festival is celebrated on the Chaturthi Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Margashirsha month according to the North Indian calendar, although it is determined on the basis of the Tamil solar calendar.
  • This festival is celebrated like Diwali and for rituals people lights oil lamps at their homes and streets in the evening. On this occasion, special pujas are organized in all the temples of Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
  • This festival is known as Karthigai Brahmotsavam at Tiruvannamalai Arunachaleswara Swamy Temple in Tamil Nadu. On the last day of this festival a huge lamp called Mahadeepam is lit on the Annamalai hill.
