Rajbongshi or Koch-Rajbongshi is an ethnic community of Assam related specially to the Kamata Empire, in northeast India. It was the dominant community ruling the Kamatapur region in medieval times, which included Assam, West Bengal and adjoining territories.
The people of this community originally live in the lower part of the Brahmaputra river valley. After independence, Cooch Behar became a part of the princely state of West Bengal. Currently Koch Rajbongshi people are found in Assam, Meghalaya, West Bengal, Bihar as well as parts of Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan.
They have a population of more than 33 lakhs in West Bengal and most of them live in the Northern district. They also have a large presence in Assam. In Koch language, Rajvanshi is called 'Rajbongshi'.
It is noteworthy that Kamatapur region has a distinct cultural and historical identity and demand is being made to make it a separate state.
