'Kottanakulangara Chamayavilakku' is a carnival of lights celebrated annually at the Kottankulangara Devi temple located in the Kollam district of Kerala. In this, men are dressed as women. Significantly, this is the only one temple in the country in which the entry of men is prohibited.
It is believed that the idol of the goddess appeared itself in this temple. It is the only temple in Kerala that does not have a terrace or a vase over the sanctum.
During the festival, at the entrance of the temple, men dressed as women welcome the visitors and at night these men carry lamps and take out a procession with traditional musical instruments, which is the most important aspect of this festival.
To worship, men have to make up like women. For their dressup, a separate makeup room is made in the temple. Significantly, transgender’s also participate in the worship of this temple.
