Losar Festival

  • Losar festival is a major socio-religious festival celebrated on the occasion of Ladakhi New Year.
  • The festival lasts for 15 days and includes prayers to gods and goddesses, dances and songs in honour of the ibex (a special kind of goat) and a pilgrimage to Mount Kailash.
  • Under this, the New year is welcomed with ibex made of flour, replicas of sun and moon and colorful auspicious signs on the walls of the kitchen.
  • On its eve a procession called Metho is taken out, in which people chant holy slogans carrying burning torches. It is believed that all evil spirits run away from this procession.
