Man-Portable Air Defence System (MAN-PADS) is short-range, lightweight and portable surface-to-air missiles that can be fired by individuals or small groups to destroy aircraft or helicopters.
They help shield troops from aerial attacks and are most effective in targeting low-flying aircrafts.
It can be fired from the shoulder, on-site vehicle or stand or from a helicopter or boat. It requires less training.
Its most common version is America's Stinger missile. Other variants of the Stinger missiles are - Russia's Igla, Sweden's RBS- 70 and China's FN-6.
Recently, the US President approved a $200 million weapons package for Ukraine, which will also include US-made Stinger missiles.
