Meera Paibis is a group of women from the Meitei community of Manipur which was formed in the year 1977.
Widely revered these women are also known as Imas or Mothers of Manipur.
Their main objective is to oppose the abuse of alcohol and drugs as well as to combat human rights violations.
They are called Meera Paibis or women torch bearers because of carrying burning torches during the night.
Home Minister Amit Shah also met Meera Paibis as part of his meetings with various civic groups during his recent visit after violence broke out in Manipur.
