Meira Peibis

  • Meera Paibis is a group of women from the Meitei community of Manipur which was formed in the year 1977.
  • Widely revered these women are also known as Imas or Mothers of Manipur.
  • Their main objective is to oppose the abuse of alcohol and drugs as well as to combat human rights violations.
  • They are called Meera Paibis or women torch bearers because of carrying burning torches during the night.
  • Home Minister Amit Shah also met Meera Paibis as part of his meetings with various civic groups during his recent visit after violence broke out in Manipur.
