On October 29, 2021 Earth Science minister Jitendra Singh launched ‘Mission Samudrayaan’. Under this a submarine named ‘Matsya 6000’ is developed by ‘National Institute of Ocean Technology’ (NIOT). Human will be sent to deep ocean by this submarine to explore oceanic resources.
It is India’s first mission dedicated to explore deep ocean. It’s aim to explore resources in deep ocean, to study marine life and to inspect tectonic boundaries.
This mission is mainly dedicated to extract non-living oceanic resources like polymetallic manganese nodules, gas hydrates, hydro-thermal sulphides and cobalt crusts found in 1,000-5,500 meter depth in ocean and promote their economic use. This mission is a part of ‘Deep Ocean Mission’ of Ministry of Earth Science.
India has become sixth country of the world after USA, Russia, China, Japan and France who developed submarine to send human in deep ocean. Institutes like ISRO, DRDO and IITM are working jointly to embody this mission.
Submarine named ‘MATSYA 6000’ will be able to go in the water till 6,000 meter deep and it’s trial will be conducted in next 3 to 5 years. It is notable that China’s manned submarine ‘Fendoze’ has dived 11,000 meter deep in the water recently.
