Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) is a rare but serious condition where different body parts including heart, lungs, kidneys, brain, skin, eyes, or gastrointestinal organs gets inflamed. In children, this condition usually arises 2-6 weeks after recovering from the infection of Covid-19.
WHO issued guidelines on the management of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children who have recovered from COVID -19.
Children with this condition need specialized care. WHO recommends use of corticosteroids for children aged between 0-18 years who have been hospitalized with this condition, in addition to supportive treatment and care.
Children remain at a low of risk of developing severe or critical COVID-19 infection, but certain underlying conditions make children more susceptible to severe infection. These conditions are obesity, chronic lung disease, cardiovascular disease and immunosuppression.
