The Union Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways is building a 'National Maritime Heritage Complex' in Lothal, Gujarat. The foundation stone of this project was laid by the Prime Minister in 2019.
This will be the first campus of its kind in India. The complex will be developed as an international tourist destination which will showcase the rich and diverse maritime heritage of the country. It is one of the major projects constructed under the Sagarmala scheme.
Lothal is one of the major cities of the ancient Indus Valley Civilization dating back to 2400 BC, located in Gujarat. Archaeological excavations have discovered more than 5000 years old man-made dockyard in Lothal.
