Origin of the Sun's magnetic field

  • Massachusetts Institute of Technology and University of Edinburgh have overturned the concept of the Sun's magnetic field.
    • In the new study it is believed that the process of generation of the Sun's magnetic field occurs near the Sun's surface.
    • It is currently believed that the magnetic field originates deep within the Sun.
  • The above new findings will help in understanding the solar cycle.
    • The Sun's magnetic field passes through a cycle, which is called solar cycle.
    • Every 11 years the Sun's magnetic field completely reverses.
    • That is, the north and south poles of the Sun change their places.
    • It takes about 11 more years for the Sun to reverse its two poles again.
