Paika Rebellion

  • The 'Paika Rebellion' was an 'armed struggle' against 'British rule' in India. It was started in the year 1817 in Odisha. Its effect was prevalent till the year 1825.
  • Paikas were the 'traditional warriors' of Odisha, who rendered 'military service' to the king of Odisha, and the king provided him with 'Lagaan Mukt Bhoomi' (Nish-kar Jagir) in return.
  • The British East India Company took control of major part of Odisha in the early 19th century, reducing the prestige and power of both the king and the Paika warriors. The Paikas started an armed struggle under the leadership of 'Bakshi Jagabandhu' in these circumstances.
  • It is counted among the famous struggles against the Britishers. It has been decided to include this rebellion in the syllabus of class VIII of NCERT as a 'case study'.
