Palki festival is a 1000 years old tradition which was started by some saints of Maharashtra. There followers are called Varkari.
It is an annual pilgrimage (travel) in Maharashtra to pay respect to the Hindu deity Vithoba's seat at Pandharpur.
They carry palanquins (chariots) carrying the padukas of various saints especially Dnyaneshwar and Tukaram. Dnyaneshwar's palanquin starts from Alandi and Tukaram's palanquin starts from Dehu.
This entire process starts from the month of Jyeshtha and lasts for a total of 22 days till the eleventh day of the first quarter of the month of Ashadha.
On reaching Pandharpur, the devotees take a holy dip in the Vitthal Chandrabhaga River / Bhima River before entering the temple.
