The Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) has discovered a new carrangid (Vatta) species of fish from the Kochi coast of Kerala. Its scientific name is 'Scomberoides pelagicus'. It is called 'Polla Vatta' in the local language.
More than 60 species of carangid are found in the marine areas of India, out of which four belong to the 'Queen Fish' category. The newly discovered species is the fifth 'queen fish' found in Indian waters.
This fish distinct by related species by having a deep ovate body, a concave dorsal head and a less number of gill rakers on the first gill arch.
It is included in the 'Least Concerned' category in the IUCN Red List.
