Puthandu

  • According to the Tamil calendar, the first day of Chithirai month is called Puthandu, which is known as Tamil New Year. This festival is celebrated on 14 April according to the Gregorian calendar. The origin of Puthandu is believed to be from the Chola reign.
  • It is celebrated with traditional ceremonies, feasts and cultural events in Tamil Nadu as well as in some regions of Sri Lanka and Malaysia. According to belief, on this day Lord Brahma started the creation of the universe and Lord Indra came to earth to ensure peace.
  • On this day, Tamil people call the New Year's greetings Puttu Vattuka or Iiya Puttu Nalvttuka. In Tamil Nadu, a dish called Mangai Pachadi is made whose consumption is considered a symbol of harmony and balance in life.
  • On this day, Chithirai Thiruvizha is celebrated at the Meenakshi Temple in Madurai which is a celebration of the coronation of Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar.
