Respiratory Airway Secretory Cells

  • Scientists have discovered a new organ in the human body, which has been named 'Respiratory Airway Secretory Cells (RASCs). Its main function is to keep the respiratory system in order. According to the study published in the journal Nature, these cells have the properties of 'stem cells'.
  • This new type of organelle is similar to the cell, which is found deep in the thin and tender branches within the human lungs. It can play an important role in the treatment of diseases related to lungs.
  • These are secretory cells, which are found near the alveoli. They produce the proteins needed to form the fluid lining of the airways. Like alveolar type 2 (AT2) cells it also secretes chemicals to repair damaged small cells.
  • In the future, these cells may play a key role in the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) related to cigarette and general smoking.
