Researchers at the National Institute of Marine Sciences have developed a low-cost portable lantern-cum-mobile phone charging port called Roshni based on seawater or brackish water.
The lantern is powered by eco-friendly battery using sea water as electrolyte, magnesium alloy as anode and activated carbon compound as cathode.
The anode reacts with salt water to produce ions. The desired voltage power is generated by the flow of ions between anode and cathode.
There are LED lights in the Lower and front of Lantern that can burn for about 12 hours at a time. It has a USB port for charging mobile phones.
