The World Heritage Committee of UNESCO, has been inscribed the 13th-century Rudreswara Temple in Mulugu district, near Warangal in the state of Telangana a World Heritage Sites. With this, India now has 39 sites on the UNESCO’s World Heritage List, and the Archaeological Survey of India is now the custodian of 23 world heritage sites.
The Rudreswara temple was constructed in 1213 AD during the reign of the Kakatiya Empire by Recharla Rudra, a general of Kakatiya king Ganapati Deva. The main temple is flanked by the collapsed structures of the Kateshwarayya and Kameshwarayya temples in Palampet, about 220 km from Hyderabad.
It is also known as the Ramappa Temple. The presiding deity here is Ramalingeswara Swamy. The temple complexes of Kakatiyas have a distinct style, technology and decoration exhibiting the influence of the Kakatiyan sculptor. The nomination for a World Heritage Site for the Ramappa and Kakatiya temples was made in 2014.
The foundation is built with the 'sandbox technique', the flooring is granite and the pillars basalt. The lower part of the temple is red sandstone while the white gopuram is built with light bricks that reportedly float on water.
