Sagol Kangjei is a traditional game of Manipur similar to the modern polo game. Unlike the modern game of polo, the game is divided by the number of goals scored rather than by time.
There are no goalposts in this game of seven players and it is counted as a goal when the ball crosses the goal line.
The first mention of this game is found in 1606 AD in the 'Chithrol Kumbaba', the royal history of Manipur during the reign of Meidingu Khagemba (1597-1652 AD).
Home Minister Amit Shah has inaugurated a 122 feet tall statue of player playing Sagol Kangjei in Imphal, capital of Manipur.
