The skink is a species of lizard belonging to the Scincidae family of the reptile kingdom. It is commonly found in tropical and temperate regions and sandy plains. They have a major role in maintaining the ecosystem.
In skink species the limbs are very short or they are absent. They crawl like snakes to use micro invertebrates and various insects as food.
Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) reveals that India is home to 62 species of skinks. About 57% of the skinks found in India are endemic.
The Western Ghats are home to 24 species of which 18 are endemic to the region. The Deccan Peninsular region is home to 19 species of which 13 are endemic. 14 skink species have been discovered in the northeast, of which two species are endemic.
