Stiff-Person Syndrome

  • This is a rare neurological condition that causes uncontrollable and progressive muscle spasms that mainly affect the axial (back and abdominal) muscles.
  • It is a type of central nervous system disorder ie encephalomyelopathy, in which myelopathic features predominate in most of the affected patients. It mostly affects women in the age group of 35 to 40 years.
  • Its symptoms can be of different types. These include severe pain and stiffness in the muscles of the body, arms, and legs, along with changes in body posture and a person's increased sensitivity to noise, touch, and emotional disstress.
