Swiss Neutrality

  • Neutrality is a key principle of the foreign policy of Switzerland. According to this, Switzerland will not engage in any type of armed or political conflict with other countries. Switzerland has adopted this policy to ensure external security and to promote peace.
  • Switzerland's policy of military neutrality is one of the oldest in the world. It is noteworthy that since the adoption of neutrality by the Treaty of Paris in the year 1815, it has not participated in any war.
  • During World War I, Switzerland had followed policy of neutrality despite sharing borders with two central powers. In fact at the time of the World War, in Switzerland, where the German-speaking people were supporting the Central Powers, the French and Italian-speaking were supporting the Allied Powers. Despite this dissatisfaction, Switzerland maintained its neutrality.
  • Switzerland never joined the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) or the European Union, it also joined the United Nations in 2002 itself.
