The tomistoma is a large, shy and reclusive species of slender-snouted crocodile. It is a freshwater species which shares its habitat with two other types of crocodilians — the saltwater crocodile and the Siamese crocodile.
Its scientific name is Tomistoma Schlegelii. It is currently listed as Endangered on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species.
The tomistoma is native to Southeast Asia and distributed across part of Borneo, peninsular Malaysia and Sumatra. It is frequently associated with peat swamp forest.
It typically retreats from areas with a high degree of human activity but according to most studies increasing human intrusion into its habitat may be causing it to attack people.
