Vapour Recovery System

  • Hazardous gases released from petroleum storage tanks are captured through 'Vapour Recovery System' technology.
  • Gases harmful to human health such as benzene and xylene are released during refilling of empty petroleum storage tanks.
  • These gases are also emitted into the atmosphere in large quantities from petrol pumps/outlets. Since petrol pumps are often located between human settlements, they have more negative impact on human health.
  • In December 2021, the 'National Green Tribunal' (NGT) has directed the 'Central Pollution Control Board' (CPCB) and 'State Pollution Control Boards' (SPCBs) to make it mandatory for new petroleum outlets to install vapor recovery system.
  • NGT has said that petroleum outlets of public as well as private companies will have to install vapor recovery system.
