Yellow Weaver Bird

  • Yellow Weaver Bird, is a species of weaver bird. It is mainly found in Terai plains of Uttrakhand and Uttar Pradesh. These birds live in open areas having rare trees and prefer wet areas.
  • Male bird is yellow with dark cheek patch while female’s color is mainly brown. Male birds make ball-shaped nests.
  • Their population is less than 500 in India. Their habitat have been disturbed because of agriculture and development works, which is the main reason of their declining population.
  • In December 2021, IUCN placed it in endangered category from vulnerable category of its red list.
  • The Uttar Pradesh government has planned to start a program for their conservation and breeding in 'Hastinapur Wildlife Sanctuary'.
