The UPSC Civil Services Examination follows a three-tiered structure—Preliminary Exam, Main Exam, and Interview (Personality Test). Important Notes:

  • Only marks from Paper-I are counted for cut-off and eligibility for Mains.
  • Prelims is only a screening test; its marks are not counted in the final merit list.
  • Both papers are available in English and Hindi.
  • The syllabus of GS Paper-I is brief but covers a wide range of subjects like History, Geography, Polity, Economy, Environment, Science, and Current Affairs.
  • Current affairs are linked with almost every subject, so they should be studied in an integrated manner.
  • There is 1/3 negative marking for every incorrect answer, so guesswork should be done cautiously.
  • CSAT (Paper-II) should not be taken lightly, as it is qualifying in nature and can be a deciding factor.

UPSC Mains Syllabus 2025

The UPSC Civil Services Mains Examination is the second stage of the prestigious civil services exam in India. It consists of nine descriptive papers, including four General Studies papers, an Essay, two language papers, and two optional subject papers. This stage tests a candidate’s in-depth knowledge, analytical ability, and writing skills necessary for administrative responsibilities.

UPSC Mains Syllabus 2025 for Qualifying Papers (Indian Languages and English)

UPSC Mains includes two qualifying papers: Paper A (Compulsory Indian Language) and Paper B (English), each of 300 marks. Candidates must secure at least 25% marks in both to have their other papers evaluated. These papers test basic comprehension and writing skills. Marks in these are not counted for final ranking but are mandatory to qualify.

UPSC Essay Syllabus 2025 (Paper-I)

The UPSC Essay Paper evaluates clarity of thought, coherence, and depth. Candidates must write two essays, each from a choice of topics. Emphasis is on logical arrangement, effective expression, and relevance. Essays may touch on philosophical, social, economic, or political issues. Originality, critical thinking, and balanced viewpoints are highly rewarded in evaluation.

UPSC Optional Syllabus 2025

The UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) 2025, candidates must choose one optional subject for the Mains stage. This subject consists of two papers—Paper VI and Paper VII—each worth 250 marks, amounting to a total of 500 marks. The optional subject plays a crucial role in determining a candidate's overall performance and final rank.
